Mr Sullivan is an NHS Consultant in Trauma and Hip Surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust with his elective practice at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust. He consults privately at the Sport and Orthopaedic Clinic Bristol Ltd within the Spire Bristol Hospital. and the Nuffield Hospital, Bristol. Mr Sullivan specialises in hip replacement and complex revision hip replacement surgery.

Publications



Research Interests and Publications

Mr Sullivan continues to produce high quality research with strong links to the University of Bristol. Ongoing stem cell research and research on osteoarthritis and osteoporosis has been published in major scientific journals. He has published on the biomechanics of hip and knee replacements and won a national award from the BOA for his work on developing professionalism in Trauma & Orthopaedic training. Clinical Experience



Clinical Experience

Mr Sullivan gained broad experience in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery whilst completing his training in Bristol. He completed a year of advanced arthroplasty training in Auckland, NZ, refining his hip replacement skills while learning new computer navigation and MAKO robot techniques for knee replacement surgery. 

Mr Sullivan returned to Bristol for a fellowship in advanced hip arthroplasty and pelvic surgery before completing a final fellowship in Major Trauma at Southmead. 

Mr Sullivan has been awarded The Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training and is therefore privileged to be listed in the General Medical Council Specialist Register. He has specialist experience in the management of hip arthritis and complex hip pathologies such as avascular necrosis, metastatic cancer, post-traumatic and developmental disorders requiring hip replacements. He is a revision hip surgeon specialising in the management of infected hip replacements. 

Mr Sullivan is the hip fracture lead at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Orthopaedic lead for Silver Trauma. He is one of four surgeons running the regional centre for prosthetic hip joint infection at Southmead Hospital.

Mr Sullivan is involved in the systematic critical analysis of his own and his colleagues' standards of medical care at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Bristol as required by the Department of Health.

Teaching



Teaching

Mr Sullivan works in a university teaching hospital and is, therefore, responsible for tutoring doctors in training, medical students and allied health professionals. He is employed by Health Education England as the Surgical Lead for Skills and Courses for the Severn Deanery and has responsibility for providing skills training for over 100 surgical trainees around the region. 

Mr Sullivan was awarded a distinction and the Dean’s Prize for the highest mark achieved for his Masters in Surgical Education at Imperial College. He was an invited author in a recent surgical education textbook and received a national award for his educational research. 

Alongside a team of consultants, Mr Sullivan set up and regularly runs a training course for the assessment and management of trauma in the elderly. Mr Sullivan takes great pride in his training of surgeons in training and is committed to raising standards in surgery.
