Mr John Hardy BSc, MB BS, MD, FRCS(Ed), FRCS(Eng), FRCS(Orth)

Curriculum Vitae

Mr Hardy is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in full time Private Practice. He lives and consults in both Bristol and London.

Mr Hardy is registered with all healthcare insurers and accepts private GP and sports injury clinic referrals. He specialises in Knee Surgery, Arthritis, Hand Surgery and Sports Injury. He has published the outcome of a personally treated series of 100 footballers who had broken their shins during the sport. He was an invited guest lecturer at the Lilleshall Hall National Sports Centre. His work has been featured on radio, television, in the tabloids and the Times Educational Supplement.

Mr Hardy works one day per week for the University of Bristol as Deputy Unit Lead for the Musculoskeletal Diseases, Emergency Medicine and Ophthalmology course of the medical school in Bristol.

Affiliations

Mr Hardy has advised the British Standards Institute on protective clothing in Sport. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, British Medical Association, British Association of Surgery of the Knee, and British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma Association.

Medico-legal Experience

Mr Hardy's Medico-Legal Reports are prepared to the guidelines introduced by the Law Society and the British Orthopaedic Association and conform to Lord Woolf's reforms. Mr Hardy acts equally without bias for plaintiffs and defendants.

Research Interests and Publications

Mr Hardy continues to publish research and articles on current Orthopaedic Practice. His research has been cited in Standard Orthopaedic Texts and he has participated as an author in the reference book used by all UK surgical trainees. He has been invited to present his research following peer review at home and abroad. His interests include: Knee Arthritis, Knee replacement arthroplasty and Revision knee replacement; Sports Injuries; Sprains, Strains and Contusions; Ligament Injuries; Cartilage repair vs. removal; Prevention of refracture in athletes; Fracture Healing; Fracture non-union; Children's Fractures; Joint Replacement in the young and Rheumatoid patient; Dupuytren's Disease; Peripheral nerve compromise (Carpal and Cubital Tunnel Syndrome); Prevention of Infection in Surgery. Clinical Experience

Mr Hardy has had a broad training and wide experience in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery. He underwent surgical training in London and Leicester. He has been awarded The Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training and is therefore privileged to be listed in the General Medical Council Specialist Register. He is a recognised "Provider" in the Advanced Trauma Life Support scheme.

He undertook a higher degree at the University of  Leicester to earn an MD. The MD is the most sought after Higher Degree. It was performed over a four-year period and published as a thesis "Fracture Healing". It was completed in 1996 and awarded at the University of Leicester in 1997. In this work Mr Hardy characterised two of the most accurate measurements of fracture healing available during which he gained experience in trauma, sports injuries and arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery.

Peer Review Audit

Mr Hardy is involved in the systematic critical analysis of his own and his colleagues' standards of medical care as required by the Department of Health.

Teaching

Over the past 20 years Mr Hardy has been responsible for teaching doctors, medical students, physiotherapists and nursing staff. Mr Hardy was the first to establish the use of video clips within presentation programs for the training of surgeons in modern knee surgical techniques at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Bristol. He lectures on Orthopaedic courses both nationally and internationally. He is currently the Deputy Unit Leader of the MDEMO course for 3rd year medical students at the University of Bristol which is a management and teaching role.
